VERDICT: Omar Maretti was never a factor in the Grand National Trial at Haydock, but he was fancied for it thanks to a solid third behind two progressive novices on his return at Ayr. Alex Hales reaches for the cheekpieces now and hopefully they help him recapture the form that made him so promising last season. The ever-reliable Geryville is an obvious threat and was ahead of Small Present when they took minor honours at Market Rasen on Boxing Day. Bavington Bob failed to complete the Eider course and will be much happier here.
