Trained by Vincent O'Brien, The Minstrel, a striking chestnut colt, won both the English and Irish Derby's of 1977. He also won that years King George VI before being retired to stud. He was a symbolic horse in the shaping of the modern bloodstock industry, being the first success of the Sangster, Magnier, O'Brien triumvirate, who would dominate European flat racing for years to come.
